CREPD is a Cameroon based non-profit NGO created since 2004 dedicated to bridge the gap between science and action in Cameroon and sub-Sahara Africa and to promote sustainable development. The organization was granted its legal status in 2005. CREPD has a consultative status with ECOSOC and UNEA, and is active in thow international public interest NGO umbrella organizations (International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN) and the World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry (WAMFD)) and is member of several other international public interest organizations (Healthcare Without Harm, Break Free Plastics, Zero Mercury Working Group etc…) CREPD core activities focuse on crossed sectorial health and environmental issues and work in collaboration with government, industry, and non-governmental organizations to improve environmental governance as an essential contribution to the broad agenda of sustainable development. Arising from it experience in implementing multidonors funded projects in Cameroon and overseeing the implementation of such project in other regions of Africa, CREPD has specialized itself in advising informed decision and policy making process, as well as the national development planning on “what is needed at grassroots levels” to enable sustainable development through daily sound management of chemicals and wastes, sustainable agriculture, investigating the roots causes behind plastic pollution, poor household and solid waste management and responsible mining. Under the leadership of its Coordinator, CREPD is positioning itself as leading organization in international negotiations processes of UN chemicals and waste conventions by feeding the negotiation processes with grassroots and sound science from developing countries, fostering networks building and lobbying skills among NGOs and developing countries negotiators. Many efforts are made to entail continuous capacity building through North-South collaborative research/activities with key partners (OK International, USA; BRI, USA; Ashland University in Ohio, USA); and collaboration with Universities through student internships and volunteering programs (ENSAI, University of Ngaoundere, Adamawa Region, Cameroon). Resources (in-kind and in cash) for activities implementation at CREPD come from voluntary contribution of its members, sponsors and donors, and revenue from the services provided. CREPD currently run with six permanent staffs and many volunteers. Its financial and administrative management is guided by a “Administrative and Financial Guidance Document” adopted by the general assembly, which is the governing body of CREPD. Successful projects have been carried out on sound management of toxic chemicals (mercury (mercury monitoring in human hair and fish, mercury pollution in ASGM, mercury in batteries, mercury in health care products), lead (ULAB, Paint), cadmium (exposure to Cd and other heavy metals in ASGM)). Further successful project implemented on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), namely PCBs, POP pesticides, and interventions as expert NGO in mercury, dioxins and furans inventories helped to advance the implementation of the Minamata and Stockholm Conventions in Cameroon.
